Leo Tolstoy Estate-Museum in Khamovniki is one of the oldest Russian literary museums. The wooden house, which is located very close to the Moscow center, still keeps the spirit of the great Russian writer and narrates about his life here. Leo Tolstoy lived and worked in this house with his family during 18 winters, from 1882 to 1901. Here, at Khamovniki, many famous works, such as 'The Death of Ivan Ilyich', 'The Kreutzer Sonata', the novel 'Resurrection', the drama 'The Power of Darkness', 'Harvest of education' and many others have been written.
The decision of museum foundation in Moscow was taken by Tolstoy Society after the writer's death. The museum was opened in October 1911 in eight rooms, where pristine atmosphere and original conditions of the house have been kept.
